Hitachi Sumitomo SCX5000

Hapo International Barges

Hapo International Barges from Rotterdam (NL) brought this very interesting Hitachi Sumitomo SCX5000 to the Netherlands. It is a used 500-tonne crawler crane from South Korea and had previously been in service with Hanchang Heavy Equipment from Ulsan (KR). The year of manufacture of the crane is 2003.

The carrier consists of a total of five parts. A central section with the slewing ring weighs 30.2 tonnes, to which two cross beams of 17 tonnes each are mounted. The crawler tracks are mounted to the cross beams. The carrier is 11.48 metres long and 9.724 metres wide. No central ballast is mounted on the carrier.

A large and spacious cab. This crane was developed by Sumitomo as the CT10000, was then renamed SC5000, and when Hitachi and Sumitomo joined forces the model name became SCX5000.

The crawler tracks are each 11.48 metres long, 1.524 metres wide and 1.76 metres high; the weight per piece is 50 tonnes.

The two-part superstructure consists of two sections weighing 70 and 37 tonnes respectively. The crane is powered by a Cummins KTTA19-C700, a 19-litre 6-cylinder diesel engine with an output of 522 kW (700 hp).

The enormous gantry is 14.7 metres long and weighs approximately 8.2 tonnes.

A total of 125 tonnes of ballast is mounted on the superstructure; the ballast has a swing radius of 9.1 metres. The ballast consists of two base plates of 10 tonnes each and ten blocks of 10.5 tonnes each.

Here, the crane was erected with a long tapered main boom; the main boom is 64.1 metres long here. In this configuration, the crane can lift a maximum of 137 tonnes at a radius of 10.1 metres or 22.8 tonnes up to a radius of 58 metres.

In this configuration, the main boom is at least 45.72 metres long and at most 100.58 metres long. Over this boom head, a maximum of 150 tonnes can be lifted; for heavier lifts, a different boom head has to be used. The crane is equipped with two 15-tonne hoist winches, both of which are in use here.

In the meantime, this crane has been painted red; in 2026 the crane is still in service with Hapo. Hapo also operates a 660-tonne ringer crane and 1,200-tonne offshore cranes.

A magnificent and rugged crane from Hapo International Barges!
